THE VAST PLANTATIONS AND THE CONSTANT MENDOCINE SUN HELP GONZALEZ CANES TO GROW NATURALLY AND VIGOROUSLY, WITHOUT THE USE OF PESTICIDES OR AGROCHEMICALS.
With their “3 de mayo” plantation, the largest in the world, Gonzalez Reeds make sure they have plenty of raw material. This means that they can afford to use only the best canes.

Argendonax S.A. owns five plantations of arundo Donax with an annual production of 450,000 to 500,000 plants. This allows them to obtain a total of 7,000,000 to 8,000,000 single reeds and approximately the same amount of double reeds.

These quantities make Argendonax one of the main producers of cane worldwide.

Their cultivation system is in furrows, separated by alleys from 6 to 10 meters wide, depending on the plantation´s age. The irrigation system is the California drip type, taking the water from wells located 180 to 200 meters deep.

Only organic fertilizers are used in their plantations (worm humus or goat manure). Gonzalez Reeds do not use any artificial pesticides or agrochemicals. Mendoza´s sun and soil do the rest, these are essential in order to obtain this excellent raw material with its special sound and unique yellow color.

The harvest is done in winter when the cane is the driest. Only the best pieces are selected based on the plant’s age and diameter. Subsequently the leaves are removed.

The canes are finally laid out in the sun, one by one being rotated manually in order to make sure that the drying is complete and uniform.
